Don’t let a single voice dull the voice of success.

George is a Great Dane Service Dog who was awarded “Service Dog of the Year.”  His person is hello “Bella.”  They have been a matched pair, inseparable for over a year.

Without George, Bella was confined to a wheelchair.   For Bella, the world looked differently sitting in a wheelchair.  The general public doesn’t know how to react to a little girl bound to a wheelchair.  Many avoid eye contact and limit interactions, which leads disabled people to feel isolated.   It’s not that people don’t care or feel empathetic, they just don’t know how to care and don’t know what to say.  A further complication caused by sitting in a wheelchair, is that Bella does not use her muscles freely and therefore they weaken and atrophy.  Bella is a young girl with boundless energy, she needed someone to bound with…that is why George is perfect.

Together, they bound through life.  George is 140 lbs, Bella is 41 pounds.  He is her crutch, her support system, her best friend and playmate.   Together they are joyful, and their joy is contagious and has attracted the attention of the national news.  Their YouTube video has recieved over 67 million views.  They are now making guest appearances on TV shows like Doctors, Steve Harvey and rumors of the Ellen show next.

1724856_1089766297711590_5524222567062636516_nWhile Bella and George are a great story – they are only ONE story of the Service Dog Project.  There are many, many (over 100+) Great Dane service dogs working everyday for others with balance impairments – and many of these recipients are children just like Bella.

However, it is important to note, the Service Dog Project, in Ipswich, MA does not just provide benefits to those who receive dogs.  There are webcams distributed throughout the farm which have worldwide following through www.Explore.org.   I recently had the opportunity to read some “fan” letters from camera-viewers.  One wrote from her hospital bed where she suffers from stage-4 liver cancer.  She explained that watching the puppies playing on “Puppy Hill” provides her with peace and joy every morning to help her accept her fate.  She signed off with a simple “Thank You Service Dog Project, May I Rest in Peace.”

She had noted concern for Carlene White, founder of SDP.  I thought it was appropriate for me to respond given my role as the Chairman of the Board at the Service Dog Project.

Below is the letter I sent:

Hello Deirdre,

Thank you for your kind letter and concern for Carlene.

I want to begin by Thanking You for your letter.   It seems that SDP has come under recent attack.  Human nature is funny. SDP can have millions of people follow us on social media, thousands of compliments, hundreds of perfectly behaved dogs out working in communities, and now we face one single complaint that seems to have impacted morale. Yes, the recent criticism of Carlene White, our founder, has rattled her cage.  Your letter today was just what she needed as it reminded everyone that SDP is an outstanding, outrageously amusing and inclusive organization.

I thought I would share some backstory….

SDP started began in 2002 when “Crazy” Carlene decided that her Great Danes needed to get to work doing something more productive than sleeping on the couches all day.  She has since invested over $400,000 in building, growing and sustaining SDP. She has worked tirelessly, 24 hours a day/7 days a week.  She maintains a laser focus on the quality of our service dogs, her staff and the welfare of all the animals on the farm. She has invested 14 years of her life and converted the family farm to a place where SDP followers can come and interact freely with the dogs, in addition to other 4 legged and 2 legged creatures.

Your view from the web cameras does not show the hard-work that Carlene has put into SDP, nor does it show that she can occasionally can be best described as a bull-in-a-china-shop.  When Carlene is tired, she is grumpy and slightly ornery. She can be condescending and brash. She does not discriminate, so no one is immune to her wrath.  She is a drill sergeant that does not  tolerate incompetence and lacks patience for ignorance.

At SDP, the saying “Working Like a Dog” means that you sleep all day and get great care.  “Working like a Human” is HARD work, high expectations with little appreciation.

Carlene  leads with a charge, and many are put off by her abrasive nature. Yet, she has created a great collaborative team that runs a tight run ship.  There are over 45 dogs, all perfectly cared for and NO POOP.  Seriously no poop, when poop falls, it is removed immediately by someone, anyone…but it goes away!  Even in the house, which is often filled with very excited (not-yet-house-broken) puppies, the house doesn’t not smell like a poopy kennel.  (and yes, I wrote poopy, not puppy).  Instead it smells like flowery cleaning solution, mildly bleachy, but definitely not poopy.

The SDP team is REMARKABLE everyday!  Carlene often says that “Allies are people with common enemies” – perhaps that is her strategy, but the community of SDP is inclusive, connected and loyal – yet everyone respects her as “Alpha Dog.”

SDP is successful because Carlene is tenacious – the same tenacity that drives everyone crazy and ignites their flight instinct. Carlene makes SDP volunteers and staff raise their personal bar higher and operate at their personal best when they enter the gate.   They all work hard and accept there will be no accolades, no complaining, no thank yous and no appreciation for a job well done.

She is 78 years old, and disabled herself.  She got into the Service Dog Project because she loves DOGs and she knew her dogs could help people. She did not launch SDP to sit behind a computer all day raising funds to feed dogs, veterinary care, manage staff, review applicants, prepare budgets, taxes for the IRS, and worrying about ADI compliance.  Yet, she gets it done, often with a smile, but not always….

In closing, you helped SDP remember their purpose extends far beyond Crazy Acres and service dogs, but to people like you.  We are not a perfect group, but we all do our best to do great things to help the SDP community.  And, YOU are part the SDP community.

Everyone here extends their love and support for you.  We are all thankful that the puppies can bring you joy during your difficult time.

Sincerely,

Janine Jacques,
