Why I Rescue Horses, Not People….

12167583_10208701148704480_1796737540_nThis week I watched a flood of posts, comments and rants on horse shippers.  Last week, I watched a flood of posts, comments and rants on killpens.  The week before it was quarantine barns. I suspect this is all displaced anger.  What we are really angry about is that horses are being mistreated and slaughtered.

I was careful not to add my opinions because I did not want the Equine Rescue Network (or me) to be caught in the whirlpool of anger.  Having said that, I would like to add my professional opinion here, in the privacy of my own blog.   My opinion is as follows:

PEOPLE SUCK.

Actually, let me clarify: Some People Suck.  Definitely, not ALL people.  In contrast, I find that Horses rarely suck, which is why I rescue horses, not people.

12367000_10153829362006804_90033695_nAs a rescuer, I have learned to trust no one, expect the worst and watch my back.  This way I am never disappointed and most times, my expectations are exceeded.  I know that there are opportunists who look at the plight of the unwanted horses through a financial lens.  I don’t like it, but I also don’t like that there are 170,000 unwanted horses in America and I especially don’t like the practice of shipping them across the borders for slaughter.

I don’t like that the Humane Society pushed to close the slaughter plants in the USA without a plan to accommodate the 100,000+ horses that are slaughtered each year.  I don’t like that since the plants closed in 2007  an estimated ONE MILLION horses have shipped to Canada and Mexico.  I don’t like that the SAFE Act has not passed and now appears to be stalled again.

I don’t like killbuyers.  I don’t like people that breed horses or people that sell their horses irresponsibly.  I don’t like shippers, opportunistic rescuers, or quarantine barns that fail to provide proper care.  I don’t like bad horse people.12832341_10208490415318373_6885488757330640611_n

What I do like, and Who I do like….perhaps even go so far to say – “Who I Love” are people who rescue for the RIGHT reason: To save a life.  To make a difference. And to be part of a movement of change.  I love people who donate time and money to help horses.

Every day, I see the darkness of slaughter; and every day, I see extraordinary people doing selfless work to help horses and I am reminded there is light.

And I LOVE the horses that we save….All of them.  12828996_1087838561269104_7284661562864918281_oI love a diamond in the rough.  I love to hear stories of horses thriving in new homes.  I even love to hear stories of horses that we pull from auction only to humanely euthanize them an hour later when they are surrounded by our volunteers…Not all stories are perfect, but every story is filled with good intentions, love and hope.

So as you scroll through the rants on social media, do the math to calculate the Good versus Bad in the rescue world of horses AND Rescue Onward.

  1. I absolutely LOVE this. I have five rescues (one actually an adopted Colonial Williamsburg retiree), and I cannot agree more. I can only afford five, but if my jewelry business did better – I could get a couple more.

Nice article. You hit the head on several nails. My love of horses is so great I gladly paid $10,000 in vet bills to save ONE horse; I will never part ways with him. Let’s keep fighting the SAFE Act. “Dallas Crown” slaughterhouse in Kaufman, TX is right down the highway from me. So glad to see it shut down but then again, am sickened at the 150,000+ horses taking their final ride across the borders. It’s just plain wrong.

I have had three loads of PMU draft/x from ND……..placed all…..still have two rescues….and can not remember all the rescues I brought here and placed……so sad that I had to do this to keep them from Canada or Mex……

I have done a few successful rescues and they were all successfully placed in new homes. My proudest was a big Belgian mare I nicknamed Big Betty (Registered name Dakota Betty). She was left in a horrific situation and I pressured the owner about selling her to me. He FINALLY sold her to me. She was a bag of bones and her feet were in terrible condition. She was so weak that she couldn’t load in the trailer. I led her a few miles to the pasture I had leased. We had to stop every few minutes for her to rest. It was touch and go for a few weeks. But she held on and started to blossom. After I got the worms out of her she started shedding off and there was a beautiful copper roan under all that dead hair. The weight really came on quickly and all those ‘bed sores’ disappeared. She was broke to pull but I rode her instead and she was a joy to ride. I felt the Earth move every time a foot hit the ground under us. A man from Iowa got wind of her somehow and came all the way to Texas to see her. He really liked her, a lot. A few months later he came back with his rig and Big Betty had a new job and a new forever home.
