Just another day in Texas. This week there are 30 yearling horses, and 58 donkeys that need homes. The truck will leave and the pens will fill again with more. It has been reported that over 1,000 horses per week leave Kaufman County for Mexico. However, Kaufman is only one of the many killpens that collect unwanted horses.
There are over 75 known killbuyers in the USA [See full list of killbuyers] that collect horses through auctions [See full list of Horse Auctions], Craigslist and from any owner who wants to rid themselves of the responsibility of owning a horse. An estimated total of 135,000+ horses/donkeys/mules shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter in 2015. The number of horses that has shipped to slaughter has remained relatively constant (between 100,000-150,00o) over the past 5 years.
There is a widely accepted notion that “the number of horses going to slaughter each year represents only 1% of the total horse population in the United States.” Some suggest that this percentage of horses could easily be absorbed by existing resources (Hazard, 2008). However, others explain that this annual growth rate is understated as it does not account for the cumulative number of horses needing homes; 100,000+ horses per year adds to those that filled the available stalls from prior years.
Many claim that the horse industry cannot absorb the large number of horses diverted from slaughter if the SAFE Act bans slaughter and the transports of horses to slaughter (Cowan, 2012). Others warn that the rescues organizations will also not be able to manage the volume of horses (AVMA, 2013).
In recent years, horse rescue organizations have emerged to provide care, funding or suitable accommodations for unwanted horses in both the private and public sector. The exact number of rescue organizations, and their capacity is unknown but estimates by the AAEP indicate current rescue and retirement organizations could rescue, retire or find alternative homes for no more than 33,000 horses per year. Most rescue organizations are at full or over capacity and forced to turn away 38% of the horses that are brought to them (United Horse Coalition, 2009). American Association of Equine Practitioners estimates that the average cost to maintain a horse for one year is $1,825 (excluding veterinary and blacksmith care).
Further, many rescue organizations exist solely to rescue horses from an untimely and inhumane death. Donors are often motivated to donate funds for similar reasons. If slaughter is no longer a threat and horse’s lives are no longer in imminent danger, rescues may exist only to rescue irresponsible owners from the financial burden of owning a horse. This may make rescuing horses and donating towards horse rescues far less attractive. We need to either find new funding sources to attract new entrants to the rescue business or look for alternate ways to humanely euthanize horses and economically dispose of their carcasses.
As horse lover, equine advocate and founder of the Equine Rescue Network, I would prefer to spend time in the barn rather than spend time evaluating economical and environmentally safe methods for disposing of dead horses….However, I have learned that Rendering plants present untapped potential [Learn More about Rendering].
For me the horse world is delineated into two separate worlds. One horse world where horses are loved, enjoyed and competed by the responsible owners. The other world where many of the same horses stand alone in muddy killpens waiting for their final (and fatal) journey. The two worlds are connected by a pipeline of horse owners, breeders and dealers who transfer ownership from one individual to the next. With each transfer, the horse slowly loses his/her identity until their only identity is a Hip Tag #Number.
Its time we connect the world and find some real solutions to help horses.
