Rescuers: We are all crazy in varying degrees….

418607_354941574536064_1527528758_nI have been in the rescue world long enough to have watched rescuers and ‘crazy horse people’ attack one another.  The accusations fly and spread through the social channels and suddenly someone who once dedicated their life to saving horse is now shunned by the surviving rescue community.  We forge onward…one less soldier to fight the war on horse slaughter.

I HATE THIS….Am I missing something?

If we all have a common goal to rescue horses, why we can’t work collaboratively?  Yet even when I write this, the Equine Rescue Network maintains its own “Naughty List” 0f unapproved homes and rescues that have (rumored) unscrupulous practices.

So here is my unsubstantiated theory on Rescuers: We are all crazy.  And if a rescuer is not crazy, it’s because they haven’t been rescuing long enough.  Eventually, with time and experience, new rescuers will go ape-shit-crazy like the rest of us who dedicate our free time to the impossible, emotionally exhausting, and heartbreaking world of equine rescue.

There is not enough homes, not enough funds and not enough experienced horse people to even begin to manage the massive volume of horse in need.  Photos of horses in killpens are heartbreaking.   Something has to be fundamentally wrong with anyone to even think that we can make a difference.

I had my moment today (the ape-shit-crazy-moment).  When I saw the photo of the horses standing in the mud. One pony had coliced and was down in the mud.  I learned the entire load shipped to slaughter; including the colicy pony.   Seriously?  WTF.  I suddenly was angry with every horse owner, every government agency, and the HSUS for making us all of us believe they could eliminate slaughter.   I had to breathe-in-bag and resist the temptation to fire off angry emails….instead, I reflected on the great success we (ERN) have had working with our network of volunteers, loyal donors and followers.

I applaud all those involved in rescue: big, small and micro-rescuers.   When so many  horse people just don’t want to know  – you do and YOU ROCK!

For those volunteers who go to killpens, run rescue organizations big or small.  I recognized each of you as an extraordinarily special person (and crazy) because you don’t care about the risks you are taking or the systemic problems that make your act of kindness almost inconsequential, OR even the recognition you will never get for the hard work that you put in day and night.  You understand that “No good deed goes unpunished” but you still jumped in to help the horses.  THANK GOD FOR YOU.

Those who under-estimate the worlds boundaries and limitation are the ones who make the biggest difference.   So charge on rescue warriors. Let’s all just accept each other with our varying degrees of crazy and move on.  There are horses that need us.

Thank you for writing this as it reflects many of the thoughts I have had since becoming a “horse person”. Yes, I was not raised in the horse world. Like many, I dreamed one day of ownership and riding. I read every book about horses as a child. The books regarding care and feeding, training and handling…maybe not the ones you would expect for a 10 year old. Twenty four years later, I am a proud horse owner with my own rescue and two retired show horses at my farm. I did not get an invitation to this almost cult-like world, I fought my way. I was surprised by the variations and very surprised by the constant disagreements among rescues, owners, breeders, and instructors. We thought high school was bad. However, I knew a hores cannot simply be purchased and placed to decorate a yard. I sought a mentor and instructor to groom me for horse ownership while giving me lessons to ride. I am an excellent student. I was confident enough to do this for myself. OThers (who would be excellent horse owners) dont have that confidence and are shunned by my horse rescues and groups due to lack of experience. Shunned is a kind word; more like scoffed at. Maybe they are just intimidated and dont know where to start….and reading some of the comments under horses needing rescue, who would blame them. We dont have enough homes for the horses. Rescues are full. Private homes are bulging at the seems. We need more horse people. One mentored horse owner means one more horse off the truck and likely two dreams coming true.

Krista, you hit the mark. There are not enough horse mentors in the horse world and I’ve often pondered why that is? Perhaps because most of us who learned to do it on our own are independent, confident people who don’t “need” others.
Like you, I bought 3 Arabians when I was 33 and had a piece of land. I knew nothing. Taught myself how to ride and care for them by reading books and just doing it. My experience with other horse people was not good at all.

Because of that, I started a 4H Horse program for kids that don’t have horses to learn. If we as a horse community don’t do something to bring in the younger generation that live in cities and dont’ have access to animals, it’s going to get much worse for the horses.
I will probably have to work until I’m dead to support my old horses and the continuous stream of old horses I am given, but I am driven to do it like every other rescue person. Spiritually I believe the earth changes are occuring rapidly and the animals are speaking to those of us who can hear it. We should be encouraging more listeners as the message is dire.
