If you were a horse, what breed would you be?

Caulfield Races  Sometime I forget I am not a horse.  If you are not a horse person, you won’t understand but if you are truly a horse person,  you likely feel the same way on occasion.

SO, I left my office late tonight and decided to walk across town to the train.  It was a long day and a beautiful summer night.

As I passed a disorderly drunken man stumbling along, I “put an ear on him” and carefully scooted by.  You know when a horse drops an ear and cocks their head slightly when faced with suspected danger?  They roll up in the bridle and scoot by…

Next I spooked slightly when I felt a man rush up behind me.  In my mind I positioned my hind end to kick, but quickly realized I have no hind end to kick and that the man approaching was just a tourist looking for directions to the North End.

Giving directions was easy because I was actually in the North End when asked.   As I continued on, I started thinking; if I were a horse what kind of horse would I be?  I am rather goofy, very excitable, tall, and athletic-ish.  I guess that would make me a thoroughbred?

If I were a thoroughbred, I probably would have racing career that ended and now I would be slightly wound up and over enthusiastic about everything & nothing.  I would likely need my hocks injected regularly and definitely best to lounge me first before any ride.

Sometimes I would need someone to pat my neck, calm me down or give me confidence to move forward.  Other times, no bit or chain over my nose would manage my enthusiasm.

downloadI would not do well with a timid rider, nor a beginner.  Regardless of my age or old racing injuries, I would still kick up my heels and gallop on.   I might drop a few riders just because I have happy feet on a spring day or I spin in fear of an imaginary monster hiding in the bushes.

I would be high maintenance and a frantic complainer of bugs and cold.  If you left me out in the paddock at dusk, I would gallop around spastically at the sight of the first mosquito. You would have to wrap me up in layers of blankets in the winter.  I would spend most evenings chewing them off; just because.  Oh, and you would have to be patient with my finicky eating patterns.

The bad news is I am a thoroughbred and 70% of all thoroughbreds get shipped to slaughter.  Many are ‘direct to slaughter’ – hidden so noone even knew that they never got a second chance.   I would be loaded on a truck with 27 to 30 others and shipped to Mexico.  I wouldn’t like that.  So I guess I should be glad I am human and not a thoroughbred.
